Statement by Turkey on the Recent Terrorist Attack in Ankara, 1093th Permanent Council Meeting

AGİT DT 17.03.2016
Mr. Chairperson,

It is for me yet again a sad and solemn duty to express our gratitude for the statements issued by the Chairman-in-Office and the Secretary-General, and President of the Parliamentary Assembly, as well as for the expression of condolences and sympathy voiced this morning by the delegations of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, the Russian Federation, the United States of America, Canada, Switzerland, Belarus, Serbia, the Holy See, San Marino, Kyrgyzstan, the Netherlands on behalf of the EU and its Member States, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Norway and Macedonia over the terrorist attack in Ankara last Sunday.

The attack took place at the very center of Ankara where numerous municipal bus lines converge. 37 innocent citizens, civilians going about their daily lives on a Sunday evening, perished. 125 others are wounded. We condemn in the strongest terms this heinous attack targeting our stability and peace. The suicide bomber has been identified as a Turkish citizen affiliated with the PKK terrorist organization who received training from PKK linked YPG in Syria.

We very highly appreciate the solidarity displayed by the international community during these trying circumstances and re-iterate the need for ever stronger determination to collectively fight terrorism. For our part, we will continue to fight all terrorist organizations with equal determination.

Let me end by conveying our own condolences and sympathies to the nations of Tunisia, the Ivory Coast and Pakistan which have also been targeted by similar dastardly terror attacks.

Thank you.
