Statement by Ambassador Tacan İldem, Permanent Representative of Turkey, in response to the address by Ambassador Florian Raunig, Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, 1068th Meeting of the Permanent Council

Tacan İldem 17.09.2015
Thank you Mr. Chairperson.

I would like to join the previous speakers in warmly welcoming Ambassador Raunig back to the Permanent Council and thank him for his comprehensive presentation.

Turkey and Albania enjoy excellent bilateral relations firmly rooted in a common history and shared cultural values. This was confirmed once again at the highest level during the visit of President Erdoğan to Albania on 13 May 2015.

We attach utmost importance to the continuing progress Albania scores in every field, including the successful implementation of its OSCE commitments.

Since the last report of the Presence, Albania has made important progress in the consolidation of democracy and strengthening of its institutions through an ambitious reform process. We appreciate the Albanian government’s will to implement reforms in key areas. We commend the active and constructive engagement of the Presence in the reform process of the country.

Albania’s achievements particularly in the field of justice reform, fighting corruption, tackling organized crime, improving public administration and preventing trafficking of people and drugs with the continuous support of the Presence deserve our praise.

The intensive efforts of the Presence in the legislative process is significant for building a strong institutional infrastructure in Albania.

We appreciate the constructive relationship between the Presence and the Government of Albania, whose maintenance is of crucial importance for preserving the positive process in the country. In this regard, we believe that the remaining challenges in Albania in the fields of democratization, strengthening rule of law and further integration with the international community will be overcome with the continued active support of the Presence.

In this vein, we call on the Presence to continue focusing on the development of state institutions, on improving their effectiveness, accountability and transparency, while enhancing participatory channels of this process for Albanian citizens. Turkey is ready to contribute to the Presence’s efforts in this direction.

Mr. Chairperson,

Turkey has supported Albania’s full integration with European and Euro-Atlantic structures. We consider that, in view of the important role that Albania plays in the region, its successful European integration will significantly contribute to stability in Southeast Europe.

While concluding, I would like to thank Ambassador Raunig and his able team for their valuable work once again, and wish them every success in their future endeavours.

Thank you.
