Statement by Ambassador Tacan İldem, Permanent Representative of Turkey, Concerning the Situation in Ukraine at the 993rd Meeting of the Permanent Council
Tacan İLDEM 03.04.2014
Thank you Mr. Chairperson.
As I also stated during last week’s session of the Permanent Council, while reemphasizing our principled standpoint with regard to the situation in Ukraine, Turkey is pleased with the adoption on PC Decision No. 1117 on the deployment of an OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. We have been stressing the need to objectively and accurately establish the facts on the ground. In this regard we believe the Mission will contribute both to de-escalating the crisis and to building confidence, demonstrating the capacity and relevance of our Organization in this challenging period.
I would like to once again congratulate our Secretary General and the Secretariat for the Mission’s prompt deployment, and commend Ambassador Kobieracki for his valuable work in shaping the Mission in its initial stages as Acting Chief Monitor.
Finally, I wish to express our pleasure at the appointment as Chief Monitor of Ambassador Ertuğrul Apakan. Our gratitude goes to the Swiss Chairmanship-in-Office for the confidence thus expressed in Ambassador Apakan’s abilities. Being personally acquainted with him, I feel confident that his wisdom, experience and expertise will aid him in guiding the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine in the best possible manner.
