IN RESPONSE TO THE CO-CHAIRS OF THE GENEVA DISCUSSIONS

Delegation of Turkey 01.11.2012
We join previous speakers in welcoming the Co-Chairs of the Geneva Discussions, Ambassadors Lefort, Turunen and Murphy to the Permanent Council and thank them for their address.

We attach importance to the uninterrupted continuation of the Geneva Discussions. We value its positive contribution towards building regional peace and stability.

We believe that the meetings of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) should also continue on a regular basis, as it constitutes an useful tool to address and resolve problems on the ground and prevent negative developments. We concur with Ambassadors Turunen and Lefort and note with concern that the Gali IPRM has not met since April and deem it important that is resumes its work as soon as possible.

We hope that the period ahead in the Discussions with the participation of the new Government of Georgia, formed after the Parliamentary elections held on 1 October 2012, will be conducive of progress in the consolidation of peace and stability in the region.

We would also like to reiterate our support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.

In closing, we would like to thank once again the Geneva Co-Chairs for their address and wish them success with the continuation of their important work.

Thank you.
