STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR TACAN İLDEM, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TURKEY
IN RESPONSE TO THE REPORT BY AMBASSADOR GYORGY SZABO OSCE PROJECT COORDINATOR IN UZBEKISTAN
915th PERMANENT COUNCIL
7 June 2012

Mr. Chairperson,

I would also like to welcome Ambassador Szabo to the Permanent Council and thank him for his first substantial report. It provides a clear picture of the activities of the Project Coordinator and constitutes an important food for thought in evaluating OSCE’s work in Uzbekistan.

Turkey supports the enhancement of OSCE-Uzbekistan cooperation in line with the needs and requests of the host country. We are pleased to note the high level visits from the OSCE to Uzbekistan during the reporting period. The dedicated efforts of the Project Coordinator towards further enhancing the cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE are highly commendable.

We support the Project Coordinator’s activities across the three dimensions. In our view, the Project Coordinator with its broad range of work serves as a valuable asset for the host country in fulfilling its OSCE commitments. The comprehensive reform process carried out by the host country offers the Project Coordinator the opportunity to provide support to the process where needed.

Close cooperation and coordination with the Uzbek authorities is vital for the success of the project activities. It is our wish that the host government’s willingness to hold regular project evaluation meetings with the Project Coordinator on a quarterly basis will serve to this purpose. We also hope that the pending projects will be finalized soon in accordance with the requests of the host country.

The Project Coordinator is well placed to assist Uzbekistan in its capacity building efforts to

tackle trans‐national, trans‐boundary risks, challenges and threats. In that respect, we value the activities of the Project Coordinator in the political and military dimension, especially in the fields of biometric passports, police reform and combating drug trafficking.

We welcome the extensive work of the Project Coordinator in the economic and environmental dimension. Its support to the host country in improving anti-money laundering, countering financing of terrorism and fighting against corruption is particularly praiseworthy.

We positively note the activities by the Project Coordinator in the human dimension. In this context, we especially value its capacity building efforts in human rights and combating human trafficking as well as its assistance in judicial-legal reform and rule of law.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Ambassador Szabo and his staff for their dedicated work and wish them success in their future endeavors.

Thank you.
