STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR TACAN ILDEM PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TURKEY
IN RESPONSE TO THE ADDRESS BY AMBASSADOR VALERI CHECHELASHVILI SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE ORGANIZATION FOR DEMOCRACY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT-GUAM
912th PERMANENT COUNCIL
17 May 2012

Mr. Chairperson,

I would like to thank the Irish Chairmanship for providing us the opportunity to exchange views with Ambassador Chechelashvili, the Secretary General of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development –GUAM-, to whom we extend a warm welcome to today’s Permanent Council meeting.

Turkey supports the guiding principles, purposes and broad range of activities of GUAM that are in line with the principles of the OSCE. The overall goal of this organization which is as reminded by its Secretary General, to contribute to regional stability, integration and improving living standards, is commendable.

It is also praiseworthy that joint efforts against transnational threats are carried out within this organization. Indeed, increasing our ability to be successful in fighting terrorism, organized crime and other illegal activities require enhanced cooperation on a wide scale. As member countries of GUAM are also cooperating in other fora such as the UN, the OSCE or the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, there is ample room for looking for complementarities in efforts in this field.

In this regard, mutually beneficial co-operation between the OSCE and other international organizations, on the basis of the 1999 Platform for Co-operative Security, is one way of creating mutual trust and understanding, conducive to a more secure community.

On a general perspective, like the EU, we are supportive in a non-exclusive manner of regional cooperation initiatives that can contribute to improving a strengthened dialogue and mutual understanding, to efforts to consolidate peace, stability and security at the regional level and to enhancement of overall international cooperation.

Thank you.
