STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR TACAN İLDEM, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TURKEY
IN RESPONSE TO THE ADDRESS BY AMB. SARUNAS ADOMAVICIUS,THE HEAD OF THE OSCE MISSION TO MONTENEGRO
904th PERMANENT COUNCIL
8 March 2012

Mr. Chairperson,

I join the previous speakers in warmly welcoming Ambassador Adomavicius back to the Permanent Council and thank him for his informative and comprehensive presentation.

We have taken good note of the report which underlines the impressive progress that was achieved in wide spectrum of areas, notably in democratization, rule of law, institution building and community policing activities. We are particularly pleased to be informed that the police reform is heading in the right direction. We look forward to the assessment report to be published next month on police activities to which Turkey has been contributing with its personnel for the last six years.

Harmonization of the election law of Montenegro with its Constitution, concrete steps taken for the representation of the minorities and further improvement of gender equality constitute other developments which should be recognized as successful undertakings. We also welcome the active participation of the Montenegrin authorities in the Sarejevo Process and highlight the role of the Mission.

In this respect, we would like to express our satisfaction in observing the result-oriented and fruitful cooperation between the Mission and the Montenegrin authorities. We believe that such a constructive engagement will yield positive results in the future in confronting the challenges as underlined by Ambassador Adomavicius.

Its successful chairmanships of several regional initiatives, commencement of accession talks with the European Union only six years after its independence, present Montenegro as a good example for the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of other regional countries. Turkey, with its longstanding policy in contributing to the establishment and preservation of sustainable peace and stability in the region, is determined to deepen its relations with Montenegro. It is our expectation that our bilateral relations with Montenegro will be further strengthened during the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Luksic to Turkey next week.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Ambassador Adomavicius and his able team for their hard work and wish success for their future efforts.

Thank you.
