PERMANENT MISSION OF TURKEY TO THE OSCE

STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR TACAN İLDEM, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TURKEY
Regarding recent protests in Egypt
882nd PERMANENT COUNCIL 13 October 2011

Mr. Chairman,

We were deeply saddened by the great number of tragic loss of lives and injuries during the incidents that took place in the wake of the interventions against the Christian groups which were holding demonstrations in Cairo. We extend our condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured.

During the democratic transformation period that Egypt is going through, there is ever more need for the preservation of the spirit of unity and cohesion and the maintenance of social peace, tranquility and stability in the country.

We firmly believe that Egypt will complete this historic transformation period successfully. We are confident that the profound tolerance and common sense of the friendly people of Egypt will not allow the instigation of religious discrimination and the creation of animosity among different religious communities.

Thank you.
