PERMANENT MISSION OF TURKEY TO THE OSCE

STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR TACAN ILDEM, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TURKEY
IN RESPONSE TO THE REPORT BY AMBASSADOR EUGEN WOLLFARTH, HEAD OF THE OSCE PRESENCE IN ALBANIA
879th PERMANENT COUNCIL 8 September 2011

Thank you Mr. Chairman.

I join the previous speakers in warmly welcoming Ambassador Wollfarth for the first time in our midst.

Ambassador Wollfarth’s first appearance before the Permanent Council and his thorough presentation following the footsteps of Ambassador Almhofer, whom we have met recently, allows us once again to acknowledge the important work carried out by the OSCE in the region.

The Presence’s activities in areas ranging from security cooperation, economic and environmental governance to democratization, rule of law and human rights are of great value. We note with pleasure that the host country is also satisfied with both the content of the activities and the cooperation of the Presence with the relevant authorities.

In this respect, progress in combating corruption, trafficking in human beings and organized crime, as well as in environmental governance and achieving gender balance deserve particular recognition. We encourage the Presence to further its assistance to the Albanian institutions in the areas where additional efforts are needed.

Albania and its people have been passing through a difficult period, which might have implications on the remarkable pace of progress that was achieved during the recent years. Nevertheless, we consider the commencement of the new legislative year with the participation of all the political parties represented in the Parliament as a promising step for the future. We hope that this will serve as an opportunity for the establishment of a constructive atmosphere, which will be conducive to the realization of the reform agenda, especially in the run up to the next Presidential and Parliamentary elections. We firmly believe that all the stakeholders will act in conformity with the common aim of enhancing the prosperity and progress of the country. The Presence’s efforts and its cooperation with the international community will certainly play an important role to this end.

We strongly support Albania’s aspirations to join the European Union, which will contribute to the consolidation of peace, stability and prosperity in the Balkans. In this context, we welcome the reforms that it has so far realized and we encourage Albania to continue with this important process.

Bonds of historical ties between Turkey and Albania, with their exemplary bilateral relations will continue to be the solid basis for our joint efforts in the enhancement of our strategic partnership.

In concluding, we would like to thank Ambassador Wollfarth and his able team for their valuable work and wish every success in their endeavors.

Thank you.
