STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR RAUF ENGIN SOYSAL, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY, Regarding the 22nd Anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide (1154th Meeting of the Permanent Council)
Thank you Mr. Chairperson.
We remember with deep sorrow the atrocities perpetrated twenty-two years ago in Srebrenica which resulted in the murder of more than eight thousand Bosniaks. We once again condemn in the strongest terms this grave crime, established as genocide by the International Court of Justice, and wholeheartedly share the pain of the relatives and the families of the victims.
Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş was present at this year’s Commemoration Ceremonies to show our solidarity with all those affected by this heinous crime.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is unique with its multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious social structure. Preservation and consolidation of this nature of the country and the perpetuation of the concept of peaceful and harmonious coexistence is the best answer to attempts to cast a shadow upon peace.
Over the past twenty-two years much has been done to foster peace and fraternity in the region, to heal the scars of war and sow the seeds for a brighter future. Yet, there remains more to be done.
Turkey believes that the way towards establishing lasting peace and stability in the Balkans goes through overcoming the hostilities of the past, serving justice, drawing the necessary lessons and building together a more prosperous and a bright future based on shared values and a joint vision.
Turkey has always stood by Bosnia and Herzegovina and will continue to do so in the future.
